⊕ Fish provided about 3.3 billion people with almost 20 percent of their average per capita intake of animal protein. In 2017, fish accounted for about 17 percent of total animal protein and 7 percent of all proteins consumed globally.

⊕ World aquaculture production attained another record high of 114.5 million tonnes in live weight in 2018, with a total farmgate sale value of $263.6 billion.

⊕ The latest FAO report on The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 (SOFIA 2020), launched on World Oceans Day, reveals that 82.1 million tonnes of aquatic animals and 32.4 million tonnes of aquatic algae and 26,000 tonnes of ornamental seashells and pearls were produced.

⊕ Fish farmers are part of a global cohort of food producers who produce almost 70% of the worldwide food supply. Unfortunately, regardless of how vital their roles are in producing and supplying our daily needs, most of them are severely affected by food insecurity.

⊕ There are many challenges with aquaculture in its various formats. For instance, ocean-based farms experience significant mortality events and potential contaminations that require herbicide and pesticide-based treatment processes that harm our precious oceans and negatively impact the ocean ecosystem.
